Whale Coil

Whale Coil

vl_whale_coil

Just last week, the Dalvero Academy show at Mystic Seaport, Restoring a Past, Charting a Future, came down. Above is one of a series of knot drawings I made that didn’t make the show. It’s a “whale coil” – the certain way a line needs to be coiled so that when the whale shows up and everyone is running, the line won’t trip anyone up. Good thinking, I’d say. I wanted it to have the graphics of the ocean and  frantic energy.

Sometimes I wish I could know the dimensions of your drawings posted here. I know many of them are smallish, fitting into sketchbooks probsbly of varying sizes. This one seems to be quite large…the feel of it is massive. It would be interesting to know if it is actually a quite small drawing. How cool to be able to depict such power and largeness in a small space. As always, I love what you all do!!

Hi Jennifer, actually you’re correct, this is a large drawing. About 24″ x 30″, if I’m remembering right. Something like that. This whole series of knot drawings are large – it was fun to work at that size depicting such small things as knots. But they have big power!
