Maleficent is a complicated, pivotal character in the Disney reportoire. As a beautiful young woman of pure heart she had an idyllic life in a forest kingdom. When an invading army threaten the land, Maleficent rose up to become its fiercest protector. However, a terrible betrayal hardened her heart and twisted her into a creature bent on revenge. As the tale goes she engaged in an epic battle with the invading king’s successor, then cursed his newborn daughter, Aurora — realizing only later that the child holds the key to peace in the kingdom. Interestingly thought (something I didn’t know..and probably should have) was while developing her for Sleeping Beauty her physical attributes intentionally took on a dragon form. Remaining true to form today above is a quick study of a steampunk-style parade float representing the complex and heartfelt Maleficent I experienced while drawing the Festival of Fantasy Parade. Now that’s some serious girl power! – Michele
