I can’t think of a better symbol of the American work force than the steel mills. All the images of the molten lava-like metal, the soot covered faces of the workers and the billowing smoke stacks are iconic. I feel they represent a little of something in every one of us who work each day to keep our families, our careers and our dreams alive.
As times change, the image of the American worker evolves. And even as times are pretty rough now, I’d like to think there is still a little of that red glow from the furnaces still going…and things will get better some day.
A few years back, the members of Studio 1482 and I visited the site of the famed Bethlehem Steel Factory to draw. What remains of it now is still awe inspiring, I can only imagine what it must’ve been like when it was alive!! What a monster!
