I always preferred the term “life drawing” to “figure drawing.”
While it’s true that in a life drawing session you are studying how to draw the figure, you are also studying so much more: your personal viewpoint, sense of design, taste, texture, color feel, grasp of dimension, expression, storytelling and gesture, to name just a few things. All of the abstraction that is part of the best realism, and all of the mind-absorbing aspects of art in any form.
The model is your point of departure, to study any aspect of your art you want to study. Which is to say, the model is your point of departure for your life studies as an artist.
