The fragrant deliciousness of California organic fruits pretty much defies description, and the ripe apricots I bought at the Culver City farmer’s market were best in show. This a chalk sketch I did of a middle-aged local assessing some of the goodies at that stand.
View post →This is a sketch I did of the lobby while I was staying at the delightfully odd Culver Hotel, which is choc-full with golden-age remnants, like Snow-White-esk carved roses on all doors and wiring that requires visitors to flip a master switch before using any lights. Notice the tech guys being dwarfed by the bizarrely […]
View post →This is my favorite drawing from the Mad Men premiere in Times Square. It’s inspired by all those gazelle legs emerging from impossibly microscopic dresses as they lined up for the costume contest.
View post →Another drawing from the season 4 premiere in Times Square. Few things can compare to the thrill of seeing the fallling man intro from the bottom of a canyon of lit advertisements…
View post →An ink drawing from the New York City / Times Square premiere for season 4 of Mad Men. This drawing is of two of the female leads, January Jones and Elizabeth Moss, who were at the screening. In the coming weeks I’ll be posting a few more of the drawings I made that evening.
View post →This is a portrait of a WAVE officer in front of her desk. Wonder Woman fans know that Diana Prince was a sexily bespectacled and clipboard-carrying WAVE officer who helped the U.S. fight the Nazis during WWII, and we all know that I have a thing for all things Wonder Woman…
View post →I used to dislike the “plumber’s nightmare” of boats and ships but recently have begun to embrace the complication by tracing the shapes not literally, but with a certain relaxed, noodly line that this drawing is a good example of. This boat caught my eye with its sinewy details and maritimey grandiosity.
View post →This is a drawing of some ladies listening to traditional Irish love songs. Their love for the music was obvious and as a music lover myself I was touched by that, though I could not help but indulge a little in their odd shapes.
View post →This is a straight pen-and-ink drawing I made at a folk music festival this past June. I love drawing, and sometimes it is so fun just to draw for no reason except out of love 🙂
View post →This is one of my favorite drawings I’ve made this year. Its of a lonely New England musician sitting by himself under a tree playing the recorder and dreaming of adventure. I am intrigued by the idea of adventurers dreaming of home, and those at home dreaming of adventure, and have made a number of […]
View post →Those who know me and my work will recognize the theme of the garden as a metaphor for paradise (home). I remember eating strawberries, gooseberries, currants, plums, peaches, apples and hazelnuts directly from the bush as a kid playing at our garden at #28. This page is part of an ongoing project on the history of […]
View post →Here is another drawing I made on that stroll through Washington Heights. I have a whole stack of drawings toward a Hokusai-style series of “1000 views of the GWB”, since that landmark dominates my neighborhood with its industrial elegance.
View post →A quick, messy ink drawing of the New York city-side on-ramp to the George Washington bridge.
View post →The weekend before last my friend and I went to a lovely place in the rolling hills of Massachussetts to recover from the strains of New York City living. The visit really did restore me, and though I hadn’t brought any drawing supplies I did end up scribbling little visual notes onto pads with ballpoint […]
View post →This is a study of a cramped 19th century milliner’s studio. Outside her window there is a storm brewing, but her focus is on the things right in front of her. This drawing is part of my research for a new project I am currently working on.
View post →The snow-haired lady sits in her chair, the unmoving center of her family’s universe, her ancient hands folded, watching the world changeing unendingly around her…
View post →this is another drawing from my book “The barber of New York” . It shows George Washington being sworn into office as president of the new United States of America. I love American history (especially New York City history — did you know NYC was the original capital of the new nation?
