It is Veteran’s Day in the United States and I’d like to express my sincerest thank you to all who have served. Here is a drawing which came to mind today. It’s from the early stages of the project I worked on for the Vietnam War documentary by Ken Burns. For more about the project, […]
View post →When you don’t have much time it can be best to just draw what you have nearby…and I have a lot of ducks nearby. These ducks weren’t actually red, are there red ducks? Greg Betza ©2021
View post →I was commissioned a few years ago to paint a couple’s favorite tree from their property. Here is one of the many studies I created while finding the right balance between abstraction and reality. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →We have a palm tree growing in a pot on our patio. So far it hasn’t grown very tall, but it is beautiful to watch. Here is a quick study of a leaf beginning to stretch out. Greg Betza ©2021

View post →I saw this young woman sitting with dyed white hair and purposely left dark roots. Though her color palette was really striking and the blue mask helped make it even more so, I long for the day these masks are no more. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →I was recently at the airport looking for the obligatory “waiting at the airport” drawing, and I saw these fantastic red chairs. Really fun to draw and an older woman happened to be struggling with her phone in a heavy purple jacket right on top of it. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →Well this guy didn’t actually have blue hair, but here’s what he would look like if he did 😉 He did have a giant backpack though. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →I’m working on a new job involving the horse so I’ve been creating a few studies. I haven’t worked in charcoal in years so time to get a feel for it again. Here is one study of the horse in motion. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →Ducks are funny…and mean, and loud, and sweet too. My neighbor feeds them and I see, on average, 20-30 a day. It’s been interesting getting to know them. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →The black-bellied whistling duck first caught my eye because of how beautiful they are. They have a certain sophistication that most ducks just don’t have. They even make a whistling sound (hence the name) instead of the kazoo-like quack. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →Here was an alternate drawing for a reportage project back in 2015. I remember it being one of my favorite jobs, just sitting at a table on a closed street, getting paid to make drawings. I never ate at the restaurant Porta though I hear it was quite good. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →I got the old dip pen & ink bottle out to study the sandhill crane this time. I feel like this is getting closer to the feeling of length and sharpness that is so apparent when they walk around. Amazing because they are also so graceful! Greg Betza ©2021
View post →Always a new pose to draw. It’s really endless. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →I tried over and over this morning to draw my daughter. She would sit still just long enough to make me believe she’d stay there for at least a minute or two, but as if with eyes in the back of her head, as soon as I laid brush to paper she’d completely change her […]

View post →My neighbor feeds the local duck population so I benefit by always having these feisty creatures nearby. My daughter loves them and I’ve just begun to start exploring them visually. Here’s a study from last week… Greg Betza ©2021
View post →I received a new set of markers for Father’s Day and spent an hour or so playing around with them. Here is one of the first drawings. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →Having to draw the tango for a wine label some years back I came up with this version as well as many fun others. It was a great assignment, lots of room for play. Greg Betza ©2021
View post →This is my daughter. I realized recently that I haven’t drawn her in a while. Drawing children is so enjoyable for me, they do crazy things with their bodies and never stop for more than a few seconds. Greg Betza ©2021
