Long, long ago, in another life, I fantasized of attending Columbia University to pursue a writing career. It took art school years later for me to realize how many books I had overlooked in my pursuit of this dream. I have tried to catch up over time, and I have certainly been known to write a lengthy letter or two, but this past weekend I finally attained the dream, albeit for a free workshop at Teachers College tagging along with my wife. If for only a moment—and all while sitting in on lectures by some profound educators—I got to study with the best of them. The above drawing is of Lucy Calkins, who changed my wife’s day and made literacy seem magical for the time we listened.—Dominick
That’s great!
