Once upon a time

..there was a girl who dreamt of castles and pageantry. She learned to discover it really does exist!

…and it’s magical. Above is a page from my sketchbook of a few thumbnails of the carousel (and company) in the Magic Kingdom. - Michele

Mama and Baby Elephant

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

I was at my friends’ house this weekend and had the pleasure of seeing a mama and her baby in action. It reminded me of this drawing I had done awhile ago…

Mama teaching baby elephant how to pick a branch from a tree!

reminiscing on warmer days

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

With December in full swing this brisk sunny Sunday, Ronnie’s post this week inspired thoughts of warm, tempting days gone by for me too. Above is a reportage study for a larger painting project I started in Animal Kingdom. Happy Sunday! – Michele

I’m not sure what happened here, but I got a little carried away and put this one flower watercolor drawing into a few filters…

Point of entry…into the melting pot

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Above is a small lino-cut I had done at the South Street Seaport titled Point of Entry…into the melting pot.  Thought it was kind of appropriate given the occasion this holiday weekend, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
May the best of life’s offering in this great land we call home fill yours with peace and abundance.

…and for those who might live elsewhere on this big, big planet…may your world be truly kind and generously giving.- Michele

A Different Life

Some days bring reflection like no others. I am thankful to have lived in so many worlds on this planet thus far, I only hope I have a little more time to venture out and find some more. —Dominick

Henri’s Reserve, black and white

Monday, November 21st, 2011

I thought it would be nice to put one of the black and white illustrations drawn for Henri’s Reserve.  I tasted some of their champagnes and they were absolutely sublime!

Cold day

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Yesterday’s unseasonably cold weather reminded me of this drawing I made last year. It was an unseasonably warm day then, but I was standing on a patch of ice that had yet to melt and by the time I had made this drawing outside of the American Museum of Natural History, I was trembling. Suffering for art I suppose…

Occupies Grand St.

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Last night in life drawing class (in Brooklyn at the Dalvero Academy)  Veronica gave a brief lecture on how important it is to take the time to observe when you draw…to observe the figure closely, the body language presented and the energy surrounding it.  She shared that each movement is a moment in time and a unique opportunity to see things as you’ve never seen them before.

Well said, it was so much fun! And thank you to the awesome model who pretty uniquely occupied Grand St.

As I made my way this morning, I was told that this afternoon might be a bit of chaos. Oh the difference from the last drawing I made on the subway.—Dominick

American Illustration

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

This Thursday at the Angel Orensanz Foundation in New York City, American Illustration and Photography hosts its annual party for selected artists and colleagues. The illustration above of the Spiderman balloon, and one other of the SpongeBob balloon, were selected for AI30 from my reportage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I am looking forward to attending the event, part of “Illustration Week” in New York City. (Thank you Mayor Bloomberg!)

Hope to see some of you there.

Town Hall

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Here is a drawing from a concert I attended (during then unscheduled nor’easter) at Town Hall NYC last Saturday. The performer, Jeff Mangum, had not performed for nearly 13 years so it was a room filled with an unusual level of anticipation.

You know I once had a teacher who said for each day you don’t study your craft you lose the ability to call yourself “an artist” and fall into the category of “I once was”

The Dalvero Academy is hosting a fall series of life drawing sessions. So it feels really good to say, “Here I am today … an artist completely embracing every ounce of study it brings”. Below is a drawing from last weeks class.
