the Pelican’s tale

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

The image of the pelicans this past week covered from head to toe in oil left such an indelibly painful impression on my heart. It’s so sad to see the how much devastation is happening to the ecosystem in the gulf. In response I thought I’d share one of my favorite poems, (which ironically seemed quite appropriate for the emotion).              Something to think about …   Let’s hope this tide moves swiftly – Michele

To see a World in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wildflower.                                Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.

Auguries of Innocence, I-William Blake

taking a break

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Spent the holiday weekend with my honey at the Magic Kingdom. It’s always a treat (and a gift) to be back!

A little drawing in the bakery while we took a break from the heat. (Looks like we weren’t the only ones escaping.) Enjoy your Tuesday – Michele

Homeland

Monday, May 31st, 2010

I did this drawing a while back during the flag ceremony in Walt Disney World (can’t get any more all American than Disney). I thought it’d be kind of perfect for the day,

Let’s keep in mind, it’s not just a day off from work, but a day to give thanks for the blessings we have in this country and embrace an “understanding” heart. To all our troops away overseas and to the giants that have preceded them protecting those blessings, thank you. Sincerely, Michele

Maria’s memories

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

It’s in the simple things…

that make life special…..like seeing my mother-in-law’s quiet joy whenever she watches home movies of her sons when they were little. She loves that.                     Hope you enjoy the ease of the weekend, michele

USS Intrepid

Friday, May 7th, 2010

“…a plumber’s nightmare” my teacher always called it. This steel proud vessel with so many tales to tell sitting tall along the west side highway. No plumber’s hanging ’round here, just an artist …who’s eager to draw. Happy Friday, Michele

Picasso _ in good company

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

As I shlepped across town with my golden ticket in hand to the Met I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was a Tuesday night and the preview of the opening of Senior Pablo Picasso’s new exhibit was about to begin. (You know, one of those nights all sorts of people come out, some to see and some to be seen.) That’s always part of the fun of going to the members preview. This time around was no disappointment. So in the midst of indulging gently in the wine and the food I took the op to draw a quick study of one of the spanish guitar players serenading the event … so Picasso, hehe.

This show really is A MUST SEE! And by the way, for the few extra dollars it’s truly worth it to rent the audio guide. It shared stuff about him you never would’ve guessed! Enjoy your Thursday -Michele

Mystic in April

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

This boat is beginning to make me feel like a real world traveler … three days in D.C. last week, now two in Mystic. This weekend I had the incredible privilege of spending the weekend with Ronnie, Marg and the Dalvero Academy on a treasured reportage excursion to Mystic Seaport.

What an experience! From the gifted access to the ship yard and the lucky Morgan itself! … to the time spent with some fabulous artists. Above was one of the drawings I did while trying to stay warm on the dock where the boats were tied – loved every ounce of it, (well, maybe all but the cold.) Happy Wednesday, Michele

Parading around town

Bucket List #18 : riding a fire truck in a parade down Constitution Avenue, (behind a giant Garfield balloon nonetheless!)

Once I get a chance to unpack my bags I’ll sit and share a little more of the magical weekend I experienced in Washington D.C. this weekend. I’ll give you a hint though: Saturday was the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival and I was given the rare privilege to actually be a part of it!

The drawing above is of the cadets preparing to line up for the start. More to come… enjoy your Tuesday, Michele

Easter Sunday .. in good company

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Ever since I was a little girl my family has had this wonderfully bizarre tradition of spending Easter Sunday at Coney Island in Brooklyn. At first though it’s not the most romantic place to be these days but there’s always been something quite magical about the whole experience.

Every year we’d park right in front of Nathan’s Famous, order our food, and sit on the hood of my Dad’s car to eat our holiday dinner. Yep, we’d be one of those folks indulging in those deliciously unhealthy signature hot dogs (once priced at 5¢ a piece) covered with as much spicy mustard it could hold and quenching our thirst with this orange Tang kind of drink I could never quite put my finger on. But boyyyy … was it good!

All the while we’d be just mesmerized by the array of people who were behind us in line completing their orders and juggling the cardboard boxes filled with their special Easter meal too. All along knowing the best part was still to come. For after our opulent dining experience was done it was guaranteed my Mom would be taking us to the carousel, (never failed). Predictably it’d be followed by a friendly competition on the bumper cars (where they still have the best music in town by the way), and topped off with a double ride on the terror driven Cyclone. Really… could it get any better?

The drawing above is a study for a painting I’m working on from a collection of childhood memories – hope you like it, Michele
