Air Force Week in NYC

Friday, August 27th, 2010

I thought it worth mentioning the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is hosting a series of exciting events associated with the United States Air Force this week from August 24th through August 29th.  The mission is to bring together the Air Force and the general public and illustrate the incredible mix of services the people of the Air Force do; to show the big picture, its mission and way of life.

The mosque next door

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

My opinion is just that, an opinion. Whether or not there’s ‘a right’ or some think it ‘wise’ to build a mosque two blocks from where the World Trade Center crumbled – the timing is awful.

There are pivotal moments in history that require time and space for those who experience its chaos to process, accept, and heal from suffering caused by the choice of others. If the 9/11 Memorial was already established and there was confidence restored in the system ‘the right’ might be easier for many to acquiesce. But does that actually make it ‘right’ ?

Ironically this is a drawing I did six years before 9/11.

Who knew then what it would mean to me now? Michele

The Holy Land

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

It’s hard to believe just 5 days ago Chris and I were each standing at one of the holiest sites in history, the Western Wall in Jerusalem, otherwise known as the “Wailing Wall”. At times tens of thousands of people gather here from all over the world to pray.

Although separated by a partition respectfully dividing men and women, we came back together afterwards and shared that we both experienced something truly indescribable, a moment sure to be treasured for a lifetime. Here is a drawing done as soon as I returned to our hotel in an attempt to capture the essence in time. Standing now in gratitude, Michele

Music on paper

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

..I once read that Pythagoras is credited with having discovered the physical relationship between mass and sound, (otherwise known as music), and that this relationship (expressible as ratios) is essentially what led to Galileo’s revolutionary discoveries in physics.

One might say this same physical relationship occurs in a drawing – more of this and less of that.

Above is a piece from my Music of the Seven Spheres series. For a peak at some of the thumbnails for the rest of the group, feel free to visit my blog. Have a great Tuesday!

Inception

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Putting it mildly, (if you weren’t here) Saturday night in New York City was unbearably hot and steamy. It was the perfect night for a movie after a long week  at work (hint, hint: air-conditioning!).

We went to see Inception (a very popular movie that sold-out soon after we got there) which left the “late comers” having a pretty difficult time finding a seat. There was all this hubbub of where to sit, where to sit??? It was great entertainment :0 (especially since we had seats). The perfect opportunity to draw a little before the real action started. Enjoy your week – Michele

Tata Madiba’s Birthday wish

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

In 2009 when the United Nations declared today, July 18th 2010 as the first recognized Nelson Mandela Day, it called for a day when people around the world would celebrate a legacy of peace, forgiveness and reconciliation, all in honor of Tata Madiba’s 92nd Birthday. So who is Tata Madiba? Tata Madiba is Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president, a treasured hero to so many.

The Mandela Day campaign message is simple and one I hope we might all consider participating in today in some shape or form. And it shares.. Nelson Mandela has given 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. All it is asking is that everyone gives 67 minutes of their time, whether it’s supporting their chosen charity or serving their local community. It’s not a holiday, but a day for all people to recalibrate their value systems; to take a look around them and to do good.

Sounds simple enough, 67 minutes = making a difference.

Just call me Pinky

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

The day is July 10th. It’s 1977, and I just got these new hot wheels! It’s a bright pink banana bike and I think I’m the coolest thing around … I play the best Pinky Tuscadero!

So it only makes sense I get to be her when we pick our roles in make believe. With the wind in my hair and my new pink satin jacket I’m off to see the world! Well if going around the block twice counts. (Mom said I could.) Enjoy the weekend –  Michele

Thank you…Mother Nature!

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

With such picture perfect weather,                                                                     undeniably yesterday was the most incredible day to be out and about in New York.                          It would have been sinful not to taking advantage of the day’s offering.

I am lucky enough to live across the street from a park with a small lake,                   (or maybe one would call it a big pond), filled with lots of turtles, coy and large gold fish, deliciously tempting for even the novice fisherman. Let’s hope Mother Nature graces us with more magnificent days like Thursday!

What does it take?

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Teachers, friends and books … three simple words, but they mean so much. This past Monday Dominick and I were having a conversation about art and asking what does it take for an artist to truly reach their potential?

So I shared with him something my Kabbalah teacher Sarah told me last week, (it was a real ah-ha moment and one worth a million treasures). She said that in order for a person to reach their fullest potential in life it’s critical they look at their environment and only surround themselves with what will nurture their path. (What doesn’t MUST GO!) She said there’s 3 elements in life key to fulfillment. Those 3 were … teachers, friends and books.

And so I took a look … My friends and I at the studio have been fortunate to have had the greatest of teachers, (for whom without we’d never have set our heights as high as they are) and yes, still learning from him.

Friends are what we are to each other, (for that I am forever grateful), and books? Well, if you know one of us, (or all) you know; our books are our lifeline. We can’t ‘be’ without them.

Enjoy your Thursday, Michele

the Pelican’s tale

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

The image of the pelicans this past week covered from head to toe in oil left such an indelibly painful impression on my heart. It’s so sad to see the how much devastation is happening to the ecosystem in the gulf. In response I thought I’d share one of my favorite poems, (which ironically seemed quite appropriate for the emotion).              Something to think about …   Let’s hope this tide moves swiftly – Michele

To see a World in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wildflower.                                Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.
