I don’t know why I find Tuesday’s so shocking. I think about them all day on Monday. —Dominick

More Dominican People

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

Another drawing from Parque Colon, Santo Domingo. This of a Dominican woman and her daughter. The people in Santo Domingo were definitely the best part of the city, which says a lot because the Colonial Zone felt architecturally like Seville, one of my favorite cities!

Please visit my blog for more drawings of the people of Santo Domingo.

Tibet in Times Square in July

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

Times Square in July! Fellow studio 1482ers Despina, Veronica and I went to draw in Times Square on Wednesday. We were lucky. It wasn’t as hot as it might have been in July, but there was a huge amount of activity! People from all parts of the world were walking around taking pictures and watching the walls of Time Square change subject and color. Wow, it sure as changed since the first time I went to Times Square soooooo many years ago! Wednesday the Tibetan people were protesting on 46th Street, so we made some drawings.

As promised, a drawing of what I actually saw in Aruba. My favorite sight of all was my boy playing in the sand. He used bits of coral for knights, a shell for a princess, and a dried up coconut for a dragon in the most rudimentary, lovely sand castle those two little hands could construct. -Despina

Aruba

I was fortunate to spend last week in the beautiful, windy, island of Aruba. Here is a boat that sat on the horizon for an entire day.

‘Dear Little Mother’

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

In Haiti there’s a new program called “Ti Manman Cheri,” or Creole for “Dear Little Mother.” It aims to reach 100,000 families in four of the capital’s poorest neighborhoods. Mothers with children enrolled in the first through sixth grades, as well as take part in vaccination programs, can receive up to $20 a month if they keep the youngsters in school.

After so much devastation and corruption, maybe the tiny voices will now have a chance in life.

Above is a drawing I had done as part of a collection for a fundraising effort Studio1482 held immediately after the earthquake in 2010. Let us continue to keep them in our hearts. - Michele

Calle Conde, Santo Domingo

Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

Just returned from the 3rd Annual Urban Sketchers Symposium, held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. What a lovely event! And a special thanks to Orling Dominguez for arranging such a wonderful experience in her country. : ) The drawing above is of Calle Conde, about two blocks from our hotel. I will be posting more drawings from this trip on my blog later this week.

Wine Label Design for E&J Gallo

Saturday, July 21st, 2012

This is one of a few designs I created for E&J Gallo. I decided it would be fun to use mixed media for it. So I drew the horse and added strands of fabric and used cotton fabric l that I had painted and scanned and layered  everything in together. It was a fun job!

Is that all? Is that all you think you’ll see in Aruba? Yes. In fact, that’s all I need to see. The horizon line. Anything more will be icing on a most lovely cake of sweet sweet relaxation!! –That’s the conversation I had with myself after I made this simple simple drawing before leaving for a trip to the Caribbean. Next time I’ll post a drawing of what I actually saw. ~Despina

Cloud City in New York City

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

A few weeks ago I went to the Rooftop Gardens at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to take a look at the sculpture, Cloud City, by Tomas Saraceno. This is a very quick drawing, only had time to make one, so I’m going to go back!  This is a beautiful and fun sculpture. You don’t know where you end and New York City begins… What a great experience observing yourself and others reflected in the sculpture that reflects New York City!

Oh little leaves that are so dumb

A great poem is City Trees by Edna St Vincent Millay. Love how she talks about the importance of context. I read it often and recently felt like making a few drawings. This is the first. ~Despina

Church of Our Lady of Grace

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Here is a drawing I made in 2003 when I was living in Hoboken, NJ. At the time I was just out playing around with some pastels, but once I had the chance to read more about the church, it was really fascinating what I found…

Founded in 1851 under the guidance of the Reverend Antonio Cauvin, Our Lady of Grace is one of the oldest Catholic parishes in the United States. When the existing structure at 400 Willow Street was built to the design of Hoboken resident Frances George Himpler (although some sources credit Patrick Healey), in 1875, it was the largest church in the state of New Jersey. One of the first churches in the United States to be built in German Gothic style, it is still one of the largest Roman Catholic Churches in the state. Gifts of paintings and ceremonial vessels were donated by Victor Emmanuel, Emperor Napoleon III and other Italian and French royalty when the church was dedicated.

Memories in mind

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Paris has always held a very warm spot in my heart. There are days when I truly miss living there, walking the cobblestoned streets along the Seine, passing windows dressed in the finest of pastries, and even the chaotic/melodic sounds of bustling passerby’s always on the move to their next appointment….Ha!…kinda sounds a little like home . (I guess I’ve got a warm spot for both :)
