These are two drawings I made some time back of a construction site near me. I put them together to make a postcard.

more Worms

Friday, May 25th, 2012

Here’s a drawing/collage/painting inspired by a mystery. Much of earthworm behavior is understood by scientists except for how and why they rise to the surface when it rains. Also, as I dig and plant in my garden I often wonder about how I could translate soil into a 2-Dimensional visual… here I gave it the ole Pollack try. The triangle shapes have meaning in a story I’m working on. ~~~~Despina

Bethlehem Steel

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

Here is a drawing from 2004. Studio 1482 took a day trip out to Bethlehem, PA to visit and reportage the remains of the Bethlehem Steel Mill. It was an amazing, unique experience.

Paper gold

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

Truth be told, I did this drawing in 1993 on Main Street USA in Walt Disney World. I was just 23 years old. The funny thing is in all it’s young, messy, awkward and clumsy way there are earmarks of personal character that has continued to resonate in my work since then. My teacher and mentor once told me what makes a drawing worth keeping is the value in the conversation you have with the paper…the more honesty, the more value. –  Michele

Slipped Hitch Knot

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

This is a drawing of a slipped hitch knot that was used on whaleboats. The knot is called the slipped hitch, because it came apart fairly easily. Once the whale was spotted, those boats had to move out quickly! This is one of a series of drawings of knots I did in preparation for our Dalvero Academy show, Restoring a Past, Charting a Future that is on display at Mystic Seaport. Please check out the show if you are in the area. It has the work of 24 wonderful artists, all interpreting the restoration of the Charles W. Morgan, the last American wooden whaling ship.

the worms

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Back in the garden knee-deep in soil when out popped a couple of worms. My son loves them and started to make stories as he played with them. So here begins my next project. This preliminary drawing is about a boy worm and his parents. Maybe we’ll call it “Parents just don’t understand” ~Despina

Music…

…Hall of Williamsburg is a great venue to see a band. Here is an oil pastel drawing I made there a few weeks back. The band, Archers of Loaf were great, as always.

Metropolis

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

Last Saturday night I had one of the most incredible experiences, (it’d be selfish not to share). Chris took me to The Modern (a phenomenal restaurant in the MoMA ) for my birthday. No exaggeration, it was one of the most delicious, delightful, magnificent meal I’ve ever had, (right up there with Sierra Mar in California). If you’ve yet to go, I’m begging you to put it on your bucket list. I promise, you will not be disappointed!

Inspired by the experience (in true ash-can metropolis style) here’s a small drawing I did in the city, (my medium of choice was chalk pastel). Have a creative day, - Michele

Arabian Nights, color

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

When I was making pen and  ink drawings and illustrations for the Arabian Nights I also experimented with some color drawings and illustrations. I attempted to create the illustration under the influence of the Persian Miniatures that I had seen at the Met. Thought it might be fun to post one of them!
