German Vacation

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Don’t ask me what made me bring pastels on vacation to Germany with me (one guess how Germans reacted to the artist dragging the billowing chalk dust cloud wherever she went). This is a sketch i made in almost complete darkness in another one of Ludwig II’s lairs, this time of the golden boat floating in the pond of his artificial underground “opera grotto”. Apparently he liked to float in the boat while Wagner operas were being performed on the little stage surrounded by papermaché stalachtites. It was also one of the first indoor uses of electricity in the 1870ies or so. Needless to mention this part of Alpine castle Linderhof did not quite match the rest of the 19th Century Bavarian Baroque décor.

A few drawings of the lovely Lynn. Enjoying several days in the museums of Washington DC, with the Dalvero Academy, preceded by a few days of drawing in our Brooklyn studio. A great way to start the New Year!

Found this one in an old sketchbook. I like the design and the structure of the clothes.

an Epiphany

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Tomorrow is Three Kings Day, or The Epiphany, a Christian holiday that commemorates the biblical story of the three kings—Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar. It’s when the three kings (also known as the Wise Men or Magi) followed the bright star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Christ child.

Did you know in Latin America children dress up in king costumes and go door to door in their neighborhoods singing carols in the days leading up to Three Kings Day, and in Argentina sweet wine, fruit, and milk are left outside for the three kings and their camels to enjoy, … Even in France, people eat galette des Rois, or “king cake,” that has a trinket or bean hidden inside of it. The person who receives the piece of cake with the trinket becomes the “king” for the day!

Who wouldn’t want to be king for a day!   Michele .

By the way …. if you have the time, take a quick peak (or browse a little longer) at the new look on our website! It’s pret-ty, pret-ty hot! www.studio1482.com

Happy New Year! This silk painting titled “Garden of Eden” is one I did for the United Nations World Food Summit. It represents growth, abundance, and peace- my wish for everyone for 2012.  Enjoy the holiday.
