the wonder of it

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Nine years ago this week, standing tall right there in front of me…the Sydney Opera House  with it‘s bold and commanding design was undeniably awe inspiring from the outside and just as magnificent from within (considering the untouchable talent that’s passed through it’s gate). If you haven’t been there, I insist! A MUST SEE on your bucket list. What an experience!

Tis the Season

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

I passed through Grand Central Terminal yesterday and wondered what the next exhibit was going to be  in Vanderbilt Hall. Then it dawned on me, no exhibit, just the holiday market. Made me think of the tree at the Met, which must be in the process of rising up in the Medieval Sculpture Hall. It is time for a trip. —Dominick

American Illustration

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

This Thursday at the Angel Orensanz Foundation in New York City, American Illustration and Photography hosts its annual party for selected artists and colleagues. The illustration above of the Spiderman balloon, and one other of the SpongeBob balloon, were selected for AI30 from my reportage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I am looking forward to attending the event, part of “Illustration Week” in New York City. (Thank you Mayor Bloomberg!)

Hope to see some of you there.

San Francisco Dancer and Dog, motion drawing

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

When Ronnie and I took a class out to the West Coast this past July we were down by Fisherman’s Wharf for the Fourth of July. There was a band/orchestra that played and performed only Michael Jackson music. This lady and her dog were dancing to the music all day long. This drawing has two images of the Dancing Lady, one where she is sitting and gyrating to the music while hanging with her dog.  The other image she is up and dancing and loving every minute of it. I truly loved watching her dance and love her dog all afternoon…San Francisco is wonderful. There is no other place like it and its people.

Town Hall

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Here is a drawing from a concert I attended (during then unscheduled nor’easter) at Town Hall NYC last Saturday. The performer, Jeff Mangum, had not performed for nearly 13 years so it was a room filled with an unusual level of anticipation.

Thought it’d be fun to share one of my favorite “on the spots”…this was a quick study of a resident ostrich I tried to capture on paper a few years back while staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Leaves of Gold

It would be one thing if the bright yellow leaf covered tree was the last of the falling, but this sapling was fighting the blue and white background along side its green elders.—Dominick
