St. Patrick’s Cathedral NYC

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

A place where respect and quiet is demanded.  St. Patrick’s Cathedral is colossal, and when you walk in it only gets bigger.  It’s a great place to draw, where you can stay cool and no one bothers you.

Travels: Rome 1

Friday, April 29th, 2011

On my recent travels to Rome I took the time to do a little drawing, and this is my favorite one of that trip: One of the shady “gladiators” outside the Colosseum. He and his collegues were not overly thrilled at my attentions, so I had to do the sketch as fast as I could and get out of there…

An Indian Garden. It was fun to play around with color, symbols, and abstract shapes.

Hydrangeas…2

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Both of these pieces were painted/drawn at the New York Botanical Garden.  I just like the way two different mediums, but the same subject, look like side by side.

me too greg

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Like Greg wrote in the previous post, I too, found a drawing that I made at the Tuilleries Garden in Paris that I haven’t seen in quite a while. Today’s forecast calls for HOT, and on the day I was drawing in the gardens, it was sweltering! The white statues and sculptures were glaring white from the sun so, I could only look at them for a little bit at a time. Years ago, I lived in Paris for 4 months, and I have always wanted to live there again. Finding a drawing like this in my archives really makes me want to pack my bags! -Despina

sketchbook

Monday, April 25th, 2011

I have a small sketchbook that I carry around with me to take notes and make quick drawings. It’s so interesting to look back through it and see the many ideas written as well as the brief record of where I’ve traveled over the last few months. Here is a drawing I nearly forgot about of The Hope Dionysos. Now I just have to figure out why I put that question mark there!

Angels among us

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

This week has been a very special week for so many in the world. It’s traditionally when the upper realm and the world as we know it connect in our hearts.

Wishing all who are celebrating Easter today a blessed holiday filled with love and light, and to all those who are celebrating Passover, Chag Sameach Pesach! – Michele

When I was making the illustration for the Studio 1482 Japanese fundraiser, I did this piece as well as the one I ultimately submitted to the fundraising campaign. I like the energy of it, but in the end thought that the more peaceful version would show the strength that comes from hope.

Bonsai for Japan’s Next Generation

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

I loved Veronica’s “Zen Garden,” and Eddie’s “Bonsai Tree,”  from their last blog art on onedrawingaday.com. Bonsai’s are generational, so I  feel that is a great symbol for Japan right now.  They, the Japanese,  will go on, there will be more generations to come and more beauty created in the world by the Japanese people.

The sun will rise tomorrow morning…

day’s past in Belmont Park

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

With a long cultural history, Belmont’s known as The Championship Track because most every major champion in racing history since the early 20th century has competed on the racecourse, (including each of the 11 Triple Crown winners). Now that the weather’s getting milder it reminds me of seasons past. Ever since I was a little girl my parents would take me and my brother to the racetrack quite often for hours of fun and adventure.  With so many childhood memories in mind, thought I’d share a reportage day spent with my Dad a few years back. (I drew and took in the beauty of the horses while he played.)

Bonsai

The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation (for the viewer) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower).

Music: Little Dragon 2

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

This is another drawing from the Little Dragon show where you can see some of the theatrics of her performance, which featured a graphic backdrop which clashed beautifully with her dress. I love the Bowery Ballroom, it’s such a great venue!

Zen garden, Kyoto

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

I drew this in the Ryoan-ji Zen garden in Kyoto, Japan. What a beautiful, peaceful place. I was struck by the way the Japanese people sat in front of this garden and simply watched. The sensitivity of that is something I will never get over. With great sensitivity comes great strength, and I thought I would post this drawing to continue the thread Margaret began yesterday -

“Strength to overcome.”

JAPAN in our thoughts

Monday, April 11th, 2011

I wanted to put this drawing/illustration of these Japanese ladies on the blog today so that I might continue the thread of the need for aid to Japan and to the Japanese people.

Strength to overcome.
