I did this drawing a while back during the flag ceremony in Walt Disney World (can’t get any more all American than Disney). I thought it’d be kind of perfect for the day,

Let’s keep in mind, it’s not just a day off from work, but a day to give thanks for the blessings we have in this country and embrace an “understanding” heart. To all our troops away overseas and to the giants that have preceded them protecting those blessings, thank you. Sincerely, Michele

Some more flowers from the Emily Dickinson garden at the Bronx Botanical Garden. I think they were some type of violets. Who can’t love violets? – Veronica

Doesn’t look like much, but I have faith. And I water, and I fertilize. And my fingers are crossed, and Marty is on duty. -Despina

The cap to the ink was barely off when the man in the center came over and said, “what, drawing a blank?” Took me a minute but he laughed when he saw that I registered the empty page. A half hour later he returned to see what I had done, looked down and saw the drawing, saying, “looks like overtime to me!”

Saw this T’ai Chi master leading a class in a park in Queens, New York. He was here from China for a few weeks. Queens is the most international city in the United States, so it didn’t surprise me to see him there. Even though he moved very slowly, he moved very quickly as well. If that makes sense. – Veronica

These two people were so much fun to draw. She was talking, with her mouth and her hands. He was trying to say someething but couldn’t get a word in edgewise. She was talking with one hand going in the air and the other hand running back and forth across the table top. It was like sign language with simultaneous interpretation! This was the moment when he finally dared to open his mouth. It didn’t stay open too long! You can see the frustration in his arched eyebrow.
Tres cool!

“You ain’t seen nothing yet”
These are the words I heard upon entering the Conservatory at Longwood Gardens. The kind old man on his scooter noticed me in my state of shock and awe after seeing the beyond-words-beautiful entrance, and felt the need to warn me about the rest of the place. He was not kidding! This place is just sooooo stunningly gorgeous.
This is the drawing I made from the entrance. Let me explain parts of it: The cage-like structure shaped like a Victorian perfume bottle, is sort of like a humongous tea infuser. But instead of tea, it holds an array of aromatic flowers and as you walk through it, your olfactory system is truly overwhelmed. It is to scent what the Greek amphitheatre is to sound. The columns you see in the drawing are a few of the many that are covered with “Creeping Figs” and make the space feel like a fancy jungle. Everywhere you look you are confronted with the prettiest flora ever. I dare anyone to walk in this place and NOT feel like they “died and gone to heaven”. (Another quote from the day.)

It’s in the simple things…

that make life special…..like seeing my mother-in-law’s quiet joy whenever she watches home movies of her sons when they were little. She loves that. Hope you enjoy the ease of the weekend, michele

There are not enough words to describe the meaning of our days,
too often we choose those that have described yesterday,
but today is only today once,
why use second hand phrases for prime real estate.

The snow-haired lady sits in her chair, the unmoving center of her family’s universe, her ancient hands folded, watching the world changeing unendingly around her…

As Margaret wrote in her post last week and yesterday, she and I spent a lovely and long overdue day together drawing and enjoying Spring at the Bronx Botanical Garden. We did go through the Emily Dickinson exhibit. Her garden was beautiful, and as Marg wrote last week, I was immediately drawn to the poppies. Such graceful, tissue like petals. Beautiful. It’s funny though, I’ve always loved Emily Dickinson’s poetry but as I walked through her garden and read her poems I started to get a bit aggravated. As Sara wrote in her comment to Marg’s post, it’s true, Emily D. really did seem to travel the world in her poems without ever leaving her garden. She expressed so many emotions and seemed to have so much buried within her,the poetry is just so beautiful. But I started to feel, as I walked in the tiny garden and read the poems that expressed so much, that I wanted to shake her and drag her on a train with me. Somewhere. Anywhere. Maybe to Coney Island for the day. It starts to get to me, all this Victorian yearning. And I honestly and truly LOVE Emily’s poems…BUT. It’s true, hope is a thing with feathers, but action is a thing with feet! I’ll take action any time, even if it’s the wrong one. But I did enjoy drawing the poppies. : ) – Veronica
