Bassoonist

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Another drawing from the NYRO rehearsals. The woodwind players do not like to be drawn (as opposed to the violins and celli, who practically do backflips when they feel the artist’s attention). I caught this guy hiding behind a column, which is funny, because he kind of looks like a column. I got him to relax a little bit by pretending to draw the altar behind him, though he clearly remained suspicious. I am still hopeful that one day I’ll draw the entire brass-, and woodwind section. (They tend to be tucked behind the strings, which makes them tricky to just casually “catch”.)

Dawn is arriving…slowly

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

It’s been 19 days since the quake in Haiti and time has revealed so much heart, so much resilience, so much courage from those affected, and yet there’s still much more work to be done to help them.

VL_HAITI_2

This drawing is titled, “Spirit”. I created it as a tribute to the courageous spirit of the people of Haiti. I will never forget the televised images of the Haitian people walking together through the damaged streets of Port-Au-Prince, singing and clapping together. Very moving.

In response to the earthquake in Haiti, myself and the other seven illustrators of Studio 1482 have each donated art to raise money on behalf of the victims in an effort to support the appeal for funds by CARE, a leading humanitarian relief organization. Spiritual Space and a Rose of Friendship and Hope for Haiti

Mocko-Jumbie-for-Haiti“Spiritual Space”

This is a drawing I made in St. Thomas, USVI, of three Mocko Jumbies.  Mocko Jumbies are stilt walkers who originated in Africa and came over to the Caribbean with the African people.  They are considered to be reaching a spiritual space through elevation.  Because of their great height they could see evil coming from far away.  They became the protectors of their villages, and in particular, of young children.   Please find out how to give a donation for the people of Haiti through CARE by going to the onedrawingaday website for those in need so that they may build a better future and protect themselves and their children in the weeks, months and years to come.

Deutschland

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

This drawing was done at a German restaurant in New York City, and is a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of German “Heimat” (roughly, “home”) kitsch. The stuffed deer stands for the belling stag (“Roehrender Hirsch”), which is the subject of pretty much every painting in old Germans’ homes, and is an allusion to the German spirit, an ennobled self-image connected to wholesome forests, pride, history and beauty. I gave the stag a sort of diorama of an Alpine landscape, which features large in the Bavarian (Southern German) psyche, because Bavaria is the cradle of most clichés Americans associate with Germany (castles, lederhosen, BMW and and beer, to name a few). A few jokey details include the flouncey lamp shade, doilies, and tasteful wood paneling.

From The Ashes Comes…

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

LIFE,  what a precious thing it is.  Being of Dominican descent I have seen first hand the suffering of the Haitian people. My hope and prayer is that out of this disaster Haiti will rise again, stronger, better and even more beautiful than ever and that our people would rise to the occasion and treat the Haitian people the way they deserve to be treated.

“None, but people of strong passion are capable of rising to greatness.”

-Comte de Mirabeau

1791

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

This piece was created for a project about a man who was born a slave on an 18th century plantation in Haiti who grew up to become one of the most admired citizens of the new world. In the course my research on this project I learned a lot about the suffering the Haitian people have endured in the past two hundred fifty years, and my heart goes out to everyone on the island. Hand-signed prints of this drawing will be available for donations of $50 or more to CARE https://my.care.org  To find out more about the project this image was created for, please visit katinawrocki.com
