The answers are inside

Today I have a special treat for you: This is the page of drawings that eventually grew into the EP!PHANY project. EP!PHANY is a great example how study fuels art, and these drawings of Teddy Roosevelt’s hats and phone were done at the Museum of Natural History in New York in response to research about Japanese Buddhism.

EP!PHANY are a set of association cards designed to break ingrained patterns of thinking and develop your ability to generate ideas through Surrealistic juxtapositions. Each card features a different work of art designed to trigger a visceral reaction. These drawings are not the final artwork. To see some of those, you can contact info@theanswersareinside.com or visit the EPIPHANY CARDS Facebook fan page. You are also invited to join us for the official launch event on Friday, January 22nd, 2010 at The Open Center in New York City.

dress the part

Here is a drawing I made of a spectator at the Rockefeller Center Orchid show in 2005. With her wildly patterned dress she seemed to literally become the plants.

Trade USA

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Over the years I have done a lot of projects on America ad its mythology, and it’s one I return to again and again, like any good immigrant. I actually did this drawing in the Egyptian section of the Met (don’t ask)

Old friends and new

SpongeBob, dog & Ronald

I went uptown last Wednesday evening to watch the blowing up of the balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. I love the surrealism of these giant cartoon characters, tied down like Gulliver while we Lilliputian citizens walk and gawk at the spectacle. Some of the characters are old friends, like Ronald McDonald; some are new friends, like SpongeBob and his Square Pants; some are unknown to me, like the giant weiner dog pictured here. But the kids knew who he was; they screamed out his name as they rounded the corner of 77th St.!

See more drawings of this on my blog if you like. – Veronica

PARTRIDGE-1

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree.”

Well, Thanksgiving and Black Friday are over and all I see now are Christmas Trees on almost every corner in the city.  Soon it will be Christmas 2009 and I am once again, as I am every year, astonished that it is arriving in less than a month!  When I was a kid Christmas took forever to get here.  My great aunts and my grandparents would send Christmas gifts pretty early because they had to be sent to St. Thomas and you never knew how long the mail would take to get there.  Those packages sat in the corner and vibrated.  Then they were put under the Christmas tree when that went up and they became ginormous and emitted heat waves.  By the time Christmas morning came I fell on top of the packages like a ravenous wolf…I had waited so long for that moment!   I miss those days of eternal yuletide yearning.
